Prepping for Thanksgiving

We are hosting a large number of the Grimms this Thanksgiving so I am busy cleaning, baking and organizing.  I have two pies in the freezer and plan to make two apple pies tomorrow. I also have some casseroles to bake, beds to make and a bit of shopping left to do so my produce is fresh.  I must admit that I am feeling a bit overwhelmed and keep telling myself to calm down but those of us with the curse of the competent, take all commitments very seriously.:) Have a blessed Thanksgiving Friends!

A Day with Diane

My friend, Diane, and I decided we would have  a Girls Day Out and marked November 22nd on our calendars. We planned a trip to Franklin, Tn. It is a quaint little town, known for its shops and restaurants. When we left Decatur, it was cloudy but warm and no rain. As we headed up I 65 towards Nashville, the weather became a problem. It was not the best of days to run in and out of shops in Franklin. We decided to head for Cool Springs Galleria in Southern Nashville and we had a really nice day together even though it was not what we had planned.  Cool Springs Galleria was decorated for the holidays and we got to shop in some stores we do not have here in Decatur.  It is hard to see in the picture but Santa Claus was sitting on his Christmas Throne ready to have his photo made with all the kiddies.  I really enjoyed shopping at Macy's..mainly looking at Macys! Diane and I each picked up a Yes Virginia Christmas ornament there to remind us of our fun day out in Nashvegas.

Willowtree Creche

A Christmas Gift to me from my Daddy. Mother said that Daddy wanted each of his girls to have a little money to buy something they wanted so I decided to buy this nativity set that I have been wanting for years. I will think of my sweet Daddy as I enjoy it.

For All Hobbit Lovers

I had to take these photos from the side so as not to get  a flash on the glass! I really need to take some classes on how to make better use of my dsl camera! Anyway...here is Marvin's birthday gift to himself, Bilbo at Bag-End by Ted Nasmith.  He purchased the print in Santa Fe this summer and we are just now getting it framed. The little card displays the name of the print in Elvish! We took it to a local framer and she suggested a Tobacco Leaf frame as Bilbo is smoking his pipe in the print.  We had never heard of such a type of frame but it looks great. Up close it looks like Tobacco leaves are embossed on the wood of the frame.
It makes my Hobbit lover very happy and that makes me happy.

Getting Ready for Thanksgiving!

Kendall is busy in our Craft room(slash Attic), making Thanksgiving Day placecards for all our company.  This little girl loves to craft and create! And Nana loves it!  She went to Artastic at school the other day and brought home a beautiful pumpkin that she made. I will have to take a picture of it so you all can see it. I am glad she gets art classes at school so that her creative nature is developed through the years.

Wacky Wednesday!

Today has been one of "those" days. I am just sitting down for a minute before heading to pick Kendall up at school. The morning started going south when we realized Kendall had left her lunchbox at Daddy and Tara's house. Emailed the teacher to arrange for lunch then her other sweet grandmother offered to go to the house and pick it up and deliver it to school!  It is also Landon's picture with Santa Day at school so I had to be sure he was spic and span before I dropped him off. Stopped at Slate Gallery to pick up Marvin's birthday gift to himself. He had his Hobbit print framed...I will post a picture later for all you Hobbit fans. Finally a time of rest at my friend, Deborah's home. I had stopped by her house to see the doors she had painted. She painted the inside of her front door a deep smoky blue...it was very pretty. She also had some pumpkin bread and some coffee to serve. I always enjoy visiting with Deborah as her home is so welcoming and calming! I needed that this morning. After leaving Deb's, I headed to Publix to pick up a few things and I forgot it was senior citizen day....it was packed!! Finally I made it home to eat a bit of lunch then headed out to get Landon! I will be glad once we pick up Kendall that we can just stay home and relax for a while. I  guess I just prefer a leisurely pace and not a run run run pace!

Christmas Stocking

Another Etsy purchase that will go on my front door the day after Thanksgiving.  I decided to go with something a little different this year. It is so fun to see all the packages arriving at the door this time of the year!! ( You can find this stocking at furnitureflipalabama shop on Etsy.)

New Living Room Bling!

I had been looking for a screen divider to separate my living room and dining room a bit and found this French Country Screen at Overstock on sale and NO Shipping!! That is why I love the O.  I was tired of the dusty silk tree that had graced this area for several years. And you know ALL Decorators frown on Silk Plants. Unfortunately those are the only ones I seem to be able to keep alive.:) I do have several nice plants that were sent to me when my Daddy passed away and they are doing fairly well for now.

Isn't it fun to change things up a bit around the house? I think that is one reason I love Christmas so much...putting out new things, all the lights and glowing candles. It just makes me happy. Only one more week to Thanksgiving...so much to do here in Nanaland. I am hoping I can get some things done this week! Let the baking begin!!

My Christmas Candle

I picked up my Christmas Candle at Cracker Barrel the other day. They have a good sale on their candles this week and this Sparkling Cinnamon just smells like Christmas to me.
I have tried other brands of candles but I keep coming back to Yankee Candle for their quality and yummy scents.

Friday

I was looking at various blogs this morning and most of them were about decorating, a subject dear to my heart, when I realized that I have been left behind!! Everyone is using cool blues and whites it seems these days. And while I think it is very pretty, I just could not live with those glacial colors in my home.  I have always loved color and it makes me happy. With my grandchildren enjoying our home, those white sofas would not stand a chance! I am really thinking of painting the wall that goes up my back stairs Portobello to help hide all those little handprints that grace the area. Then I remember that soon those little hands will be big hands and I will miss them.

None of the colors in my home are bright colors but instead cozy colors like Nantucket Grey, Wedgewood Blue, Portobello and Pillar.  I went against the decorators  adage of buying a neutral sofa and purchased one that has a pretty pattern! I have decided that my house is my "home" and I want it to reflect me and my  personality.

What about you? Are you on board with all the neutrals in blogland?

Singing....

This picture is special to me because it was made on the Saturday before my Daddy went to heaven. We were in Chatsworth visiting him but he was not even conscious on that Saturday. He loved to see the great grands but he just was not doing well that day. That Saturday evening, my sisters and I and my niece, Laura, gathered in his bedroom and we began singing the old hymns we all loved. In our family it is not unusual to gather to sing at a loved ones bedside as they are preparing for heaven. I can remember singing at my great grandmother's bedside. My sisters tell the story of singing with my Grandmother Henderson after she had a stroke and was not really with it but she could sing the hymns she knew.  In this picture, we were singing and Margaret came in and crawled in my lap with her "lambie" or nasty lambie as I call it. It is her lovie and while it may be nasty, she finds great comfort in it!!  When I saw this picture that my sister took while we were singing, I knew I had to have it! It will always remind me of a precious time.

Baby Sarah

This is my Chinese granddaughter, Sarah Jiang.  Sarah is the daughter of my Chinese son, Christian. Christian was a good friend to my son, Charles, when he lived in China. We have adopted Christian and though I have never met him, he is my son. His little girl was born in October but we just received the pictures on Sunday. I am hoping one day I can see Christian and his family in person!!

Lalaloopsy!

Here is the Lalaloopsy Doll that Margaret will be getting from Nana and Grandpa at her party tomorrow. Her name is Pillow Featherbed and her pet is a lamb. The theme for Margaret's party is Lalaloopsy and I found lot of Lalaloopsy supplies at Party Central here in Decatur. I am heading back there today to pick up some Lalaloopsy Balloons. I am getting a bit excited about the party! Can you tell?
Both Kendall and Margaret are big Lalaloopsy fans. These little dolls (and there are some big ones too!)  lead to hours of play for my girls.  Margaret's birthday party will be here at my house and we are expecting a big crowd of family. So I will miss tomorrow's post but will be back on Monday with lots of pictures!(I hope!!)
