The Stream

Let's dive in and see what is swimming around in Nana's mind!

1. I came home from Georgia with some sort of 24 hour bug.  I am not sure if it was a bug or extreme exhaustion after a week of taking care of my sweetie but it laid me low over the weekend. I stayed on the sofa and in the bed but woke up this morning feeling fine. Maybe I just needed the rest.

2, How many of you are looking forward to the Bronte Sisters series on Masterpiece Theater on PBS?  To Walk Invisible tells the story of the three Bronte sisters who lived a quiet life as a clergyman's daughters but sought for a life outside their humble home.  Their dissolute brother, Branwell, also lives in the home. All three girls wrote novels...Charlotte wrote Jane Eyre, Emily wrote Wuthering Heights and Anne wrote The Tenant at Wildfell Hall. I am not familiar with Anne's book so I may have to check that one out at the library.  I read a book about Charlotte years ago and if I remember correctly, Jane Eyre was published under a pseudonym because the public would not read a book written by a woman.  The series calls the Brontes 'secret authors" so this was probably true for all of them.   PBS brings us so many good British series. I am also waiting on the next season of Home Fires.

3. I am officially an old lady. Why? Ok, I will confess I wore thigh high hose to my Uncle Robert's funeral. I have heard all the stories about why panty hose are passe'. No one wears them anymore. Go bare legged! Please people, bare legs might look good on sweet young things but 62 year old pasty legs need some help. I forgot my panty hose and Mother told me she had a pair of hose she would give me. Well, I did not ask what kind they were and since I needed a pair, I took the package not realizing they were thigh highs. I had to laugh as I  pulled them on. I remember my mother in law purchasing this kind for herself and her mother and me thinking, what in the world???  But ladies, after wearing them I can see the appeal.  I doubt I will convert as I like the panty part that helps suck in and smooth all the bumps and bulges but don't knock thigh highs until you try them!

4. Today is our first meeting of the Glens Book Club. I have read the book, The Awakening of Miss Prim. I took some notes and underlined some passages so I think I am ready to participate. I love reading and I look forward to hearing what others thought about the book. Sometimes we all see things differently. Thanks to my friend, Susan for establishing the group.

5. I am enjoying the Daylight Savings Time. It helps me to get in all my steps each day. Last week with Audrey here, I did not reach my goal any day but I am going to jump back in this week. One thing I have learned as I have gotten older...if you do not reach your goals, don't give up. ( As my perfectionist self would have done years ago) Just get back on that horse and ride.  Consistency is my goal now rather than perfection.

Time to get busy here at Nanaland. Steps were not the only thing that was neglected last week.  Have a great day Blog Friends.

Arlene, you had me laughing out loud over the thigh high hose. I am not a fan of the bare legs either. At a certain age, it is just not a good thing. I am going to have lumpy legs as I call them as I get older. I have a couple of veins that stick out. I am so glad the Princess Kate likes hose. I would think if nothing else the younger crowd would want some warmth from them.

I have a question for you. I was reading the post that Vonna did on how she stitches. I know we have both decided we don't like that two handed thing. That would take all the calming out of it for me. However, do you make an X and move on or do you the first half and come back and cross over. I noticed she does a complete X and then moves on. That surprised me.

Enjoy your day!

Sandy, I was laughing myself as I pulled those suckers on!! As to the cross stitch. If I am using DMC, then I do one half of the stitch and come back to cross it. But if I am using specialty threads I do one cross at a time as my LNS owner instructed me. She says they have a subtle variation and if you cross country with them, the stitches may look wonky. While I enjoy Vonna's videos, she cross stitches like it is a job and not a hobby. I get so much calm and relaxation from my style of stitching. Vonna's style reminds me of a sewing machine, which I have a love hate relationship with at times.lol

I love your adventure with the thigh high hose!! You had me laughing. I do agree with you about going bare-legged, not for me, my old legs also need all the help they can get!! I too am looking forward the new shows on PBS!!

Mary, I totally agree...some things are better covered up!! I have been reading your blog and I became a follower but could not leave a comment. Just wanted you to know that I am visiting.

Ha! I had to laugh at the paragraph about the thigh highs. I think they're great when you have to have something in a hurry, although I really prefer to wear pants and not bother about anything else on my legs. :-) I am looking forward to anything good on Masterpiece. What would we do without it?? IMHO, there's nothing else on TV. I'll enjoy the Bronte sisters for sure. We did watch a movie on Amazon, War Bride, which was very good, I thought. It's about two young WWII brides who left London (their home) and went to Canada to live with their respective husband's families until the war was over.

I love the Bronte sisters. I have read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, but haven't heard of Anne's book. I will have to look into reading it. I'm going to have to see about watching that show, too. Sounds like one I would like!

With the cold weather up here in Michigan, my hubby and I were not able to get outside and walk, so we both got memberships to a local gym. I have not gone lately, but I definitely need to get back into the swing of things! With it warming up, though, we might be able to get in some outside time too!

Hello Arlene,

I have enjoyed reading here at Nanaland! I was sorry to hear of your uncle's passing.

You probably didn't know it, but you wrote #5 just for me. :) These words, "One thing I have learned as I have gotten older...if you do not reach your goals, don't give up. ( As my perfectionist self would have done years ago) Just get back on that horse and ride." is what I need to remember right now. So, thanks to you, I'll be back at the gym to pursue this new goal of consistency rather than perfection. :) Thanks so much!

Oh, I agree about my white legs being bare! ugh
Cute story about the thigh highs!
Sorry you were sick over the weekend. Glad you are feeling better today. xoxo

Judy, I will never be able to wear pants to a funeral as long as my mother is alive and kicking! I did wear them to the visitation and she did not comment, but hey it was dressy pants.:) I am 62 years old and my mother still dictates what I wear! Like you, I wonder why we cannot have really good tv productions like Masterpiece? My daughter in law told me about a tv service called Britbox(?) which sounds similar to Acorn TV...just British shows. Sounds like it would be perfect for me.

Heather, let's read that book!! I will try to find it and review it here at Nanaland. It is a very warm day here so I have no excuses but I will get back in the saddle tomorrow. I am still recuperating from my bug...that is my story and I am sticking to it.

Dianna, thanks so much for stopping to visit. As you can tell I am not very tech savvy or I would know how to have a reply to each comment. :) I am glad I encouraged you today. We perfectionists can often be very hard on ourselves while we would never think badly of someone else who missed getting in their steps!:)) One reason I like blogging is all the nice people I meet and the friendship and encouragement I find online.

Mildred I am almost 100% today. I really thought I might be getting the flu. Thankfully I believe I was just exhausted. Poor Marvin came down with a cold so I guess our tiredness allowed bugs to jump on board.

Audrey is so cute! She would have worn me out, that's for sure. A good worn-out, but just the same...

I love Masterpiece and will try to remember to catch this series. Thanks for the reminder!

I don't wear pantyhose anymore. My legs don't look nice bare either, but I discovered Sally Hansen leg make-up and it is fantastic!! Covers nicely and doesn't rub off. I get it at Walgreens.

Arlene, I always enjoy The Stream! So happy that you are feeling so much better. Almost certainly it was just exhaustion along with the emotional stress of the funeral and so on.

So humorous about the thigh highs. I honestly don't think bare legs look good on anyone older than a teenager. I don't know what they are thinking.

I enjoyed reading the interchange between you and Sandy concerning cross stitch. My cardinal is coming along slowly but looking good.

Arlene Grimm said...

Terri, I am not aware of leg make up...will look for it. I have tried self tanner and I end up all streaky!! Mrs T...glad you enjoyed our cross stitch conversation. I really enjoy the process of stitching, taking my time and breathing slowly in and out while I see the pattern emerge. It is rather like meditation.

Arlene, I am so glad that you are feeling better. Rest must have done the trick!

I am looking forward to the Bronte Sisters show. I will have to keep a look out for it. Is it starting in April?

You are too cute - pasty legs! I don't know if I've ever worn thigh high nylons. Do you need a garter belt or are they elastic-y enough to stay up?

Have a lovely evening!

Sorry you were sick!
Thanks for the info on the Bronte sisters. I didn't know about it but will definitely want to see it. I love that type of show.
You had me laughing about the nylons. My pasty legs need them too!

Arlene Grimm said...

Gina, those thigh highs do not require a garter, they have a grabby kind of stuff at the top. I am not sure how long it "grabs" before it lets go!!lol I will test them to find out! Mari, I am Scotch Irish English and have the kind of skin that glows in the dark. Aint nobody wants to see that!!:)

I remember thigh highs!! And panty hose! I don't like showing MY bare legs! IF they looked as good as some - no problem! But my legs look so much better in HOSE!!!
