The Stream

Good Morning...let's wade in the shallow end of the stream today.( That means I really do not have a lot on my mind this morning!!)

1. I just finished a really good police procedural/mystery this weekend. A Great Reckoning by Louise Penny is sure to grab your attention if you are a fan of Masterpiece series like Endeavor, Morse and Prime Suspect and Inspector Adam Dalgliesh. I stayed up until midnight Friday night trying to finish this book but sleep claimed me and I had to finish it Saturday morning.  Many people say they would like to live in Mitford. Well I might want to move to Three Pines. ( And this mystery explains how Three Pines got its name.) I may have to start at the beginning and read the rest of this series.

2. Well I got an email from Blogger and just as I was getting used to moderating my comments in this new way, they are going back to the old format. I am once again getting emails with my comments and I can publish them from my Hotmail account. Can you tell I do not do well with change?

3. Marvin has decided that he is going to retire at the end of this year.  It will be a big change. I am used to his working two and a half days a week so I know I have some ALONE time. I may need some advice from those of you with fully retired husbands.  I am trying to look on the positive side as we will be able to do more things together but I am a person who needs the house to herself every now and then. I may have to send him to Grimmwood occasionally.

4. I have been buying more cross stitch stash than I normally do but I am trying to save up for the future. I know when Marvin retires we will have to adjust our spending habits. I do use my Social Security check money for my purchases. But once I turn 65 the check will decrease as I get to enjoy Medicare. Frankly I am looking forward to the Silver Sneakers program that comes with Marvin's package. We can go to several gyms in Decatur for FREE. I am thinking of going to the Water Aerobics class as that is good exercise but easy on the joints.

5. Marvin and I are planning a Siblings reunion for his brothers and sisters in September. We are trying to come up with a hashtag for the weekend. Daughter in law, Katy, came up with #the future is GRIMM #Grimm and Bear It #Grimming from Ear to Ear. So far I like the Future is Grimm. Any of your suggestions will be considered.  I thought of #the brothers and sisters Grimm

6.I am like most of you, trying to avoid the pumpkin mania too early. I will probably wait until we come back from the beach in September to deck the walls with fall decor. However, now is the time to look for good bargains at discount stores such as TJ Maxx, Ross, Tuesday Morning and Big Lots.  I have used the same fall wreath on my front door for over 10 years now. I spruced it up every now and then but it was time for a new one. I found a beautiful wreath at Ross for $17.99. I am sure it will show up in my Friday Five this week. I can tell you that if you do not pick up those bargains when you see them, they will be GONE. I have tried to avoid Impulse Buying but in some cases it is the way to go.

Hope all of you have a good week. I am off to breakfast with friend, Lori, today and then withe Deborah and Susan tomorrow. Breakfast out is one of my favorite restaurant meals.

When your hubby is home with you, it is harder to find alone time, or I find that to be so. I am like you tho, I do need it now and then. I enjoyed water aerobics for about a year....I never felt better when I was doing it, so I highly recommend it. Enjoy breakfast with friends.

I think every lady knows what you mean about the alone time. I look forward to Jeff having the time off, but know it will cramp my style immensely. He can't sit still and wants me to go go go.
I already felt a huge pinch when I retired. We will definitely have to make some adjustments when he retires.
Buy all the patterns you want!
I am starting to get fall fever too, but I am trying to hold off because I get tired of it before Thanksgiving if I start too early.

I have the same apprehension about my husband retiring. He will have to do something on a regular-scheduled basis so I can know/plan some alone time. I hope someone leaves a comment telling how they work it out. My husband has not set a date for retirement and it may even be a few years but that's the first thing I think about when he mentions it. I am waiting until September 1 to get fall going around here. For your reunion, #GrimmFam2018 popped into my head.

Enjoy your breakfast out today and tomorrow, Arlene! I enjoyed wading with you in the stream today. You are so right about making those autumn purchases now before everything gets picked over.

Regarding #3... this is indeed an adjustment and I feel your concern about your decreased (or non-existent!) "alone" time in the house. I tried to explain this to my husband numerous times and it was a tough. He seems to get it now, but it's taken a couple of years.

For what it's worth, I like "Grimming from Ear to Ear" because it has such a positive spin to it.

We enjoy our time together, but we also have different interests. He likes to work in his shop and I like to spend time in my craft/sewing room-it's not like we are constantly together. After 6 years, we've settled into a routine that suits us both. We have things we enjoy doing together and things we enjoy doing separately.

You DO have a lot going on and so much to look forward to! LOVE the Louise Penny series and I've also wanted to move to that small town and visit Quebec City! Enjoy your day!

Marvin will most likely need some 'alone' time too, so you two will just need to plan for it and make it work. Keep us posted on the hashtag for the sibling reunion! I like all the ones you mentioned.

By all means, start with the first Louise Penny book and read though them in order! They are a lot more fun that way. My favorite author - she has one coming out in November so you'd better get started! Check out her Facebook page, her monthly newsletter and listen to some interviews etc. she has given. She is great!

Retirement does have its adjustments, Arlene. I've always enjoyed my solitude so there have been a few challenges. I try to keep in mind that my husband is going through a lot of changes, too, as he is used to having the scientists at the lab to share life with every day for 15 years. But in the long is definitely worth the adjustments that we each have to make.

Arlene, I have friends with the Silver Sneakers benefits and I can hardly wait until Bob and I get ours! Too cute about the water aerobics. I've told people that is what I want to do too. ♥

I confess that I am a craft hoarder but I am organizing it and using it. It is so hard to say no to myself when I see a great deal!

I posted all about homemade bone broth today. Have you tried bone broth before?

I like Grimming from ear to ear too. It sounds like it is going to be a fun get together.

My husband has always been one to keep himself very busy so no trouble having him retired. He keeps busy with Rotary, spinning, writing his third book and guys groups like breakfast with the boys, lunch and dinner with friends. Throw in all of his treatments and sometimes I feel like I don't see him enough. You will get used to Marvin being home all the time and you both will develop your own likes. Now worries ... it will all work out. RJ

Grimming from ear to ear is good!
I understand needing alone time. When Bob retires I will feel the same.
Keep stocking up on that stitching stuff!

I think it's great to have a place like Grimmwood to retreat to for some alone time, Arlene! My husband is retiring in two years and I'm already worrying... I truly need my alone time as I'm an introvert! He does have hobbies, thank goodness, but it will be a huge change for us. On the other hand, we won't have any time restrictions for our travels any more and that will be so nice! With two of our sons living in other states, we need to have more travel time. Good luck to you both :)
