The Stream

1. Well we are cutting the cord and getting rid of cable. Right now we have Amazon Prime but we are thinking of adding another streaming service. Any suggestions?  Marvin always kept cable for sports. Being Sportsless for over three months now, Grandpa thinks he can manage without it. He decided if there is a big football game he just has to see, he will go to a friend's house or a sports bar.  As I have said before, I watch mostly you tube now so the only thing I will miss is Jeopardy and Masterpiece Theater.

2. Amelia is turning 40 tomorrow. Seems impossible. We had a family lunch yesterday and then we took the kiddos shopping for a gift for their mom.  I do remember that it was hot as hades the summer she was born. My legs were so swollen....I had to wear Dr Scholls shoes at the end of the pregnancy. I was still working as a nurse at the Student Health Center at UGA in Athens, GA. I had worked until eight pm ...went home and had a harrowing 4 am ride to the hospital, hoping I would not have this baby in the car! She was born 10 minutes after we arrived at Athens General.  The memories are still vivid.:)

3. We are off to Grimmwood for the 4th.  No big plans for the day. But that is ok...porch sitting is a good thing on a hot July day.

4. I do have plans to get together with a Morris cousin. We are both interested in genealogy so we want to compare notes. Our Morris family migrated from Rutherford County, NC to Gilmer County in Georgia. A large contingent of people from Rutherford County headed off to the wilderness looking for some good farm land,   The Morris clan is an independent not to provoke them. :)

5. I have found myself reading more as of late.  I am trying to read just before I go to bed. It seems to help me fall asleep.  I am reading the Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis and I keep getting confused because Screwtape keeps calling God, the Enemy. I am not used to that!!  I have to remind myself that he is not talking about the Devil.  It is interesting reading this book as I am older. I read it a long time ago and frankly did not remember much about it. Perspective does change with age.

6. We have a new commercial pilot in our family. My cousin, Ben, just got his license after some pretty intensive training Can you tell we like the name, Ben, in our family??? We always called him Benjamin , when he was younger. He is the son of my first cousin, Sharon. My mother babysat for Benjamin and Laura when they were babies and toddlers. It is good to see both of them enjoying their new walks of life.  Ben hopes to ferry people between Florida and the Bahamas.  Now those passengers are living the dream for sure.

The stream is still pretty shallow here at Nanaland. We are staying in a bit more and I am stitching up a storm.

Porch sitting at Grimmwood sounds delightful to me. We have talked about cutting cable too due to expense, etc. Dont know what we would change to however. Keep us posted as to what you decide on.

Hi Arlene. Look into YouTube Premium ($49.95 a month). It has most of the sports channels, as well as PBS for your Masterpiece shows. Also compare to Sling TV. With YouTube you can get local channels, therefore Jeopardy! What we haven’t figured out is how to DVR with a streaming device.
As always love reading your blog. Happy 4th. (As that’s my husband’s birthday, we always celebrate)

Enjoyed today's stream visit, Arlene! Happy 40th birthday wishes to Amelia! I can't help you on the streaming stuff; we don't have cable (it doesn't come out this far in the county I live in) so we have satellite for our TV services. We talk about getting rid of it at times. Enjoy your visit to Grimmwood and your 4th of July.

Good for you, for getting rid of Cable!!!!

With the Cable Co., we also have our land line, and internet. Yes, we still use a land line for telephone. Only have old flip cell phones, just for emergencies.

And we don't know how to do the techy stuff, which many people do, when they get rid of Cable.

Best wishes to you, with this!!!

We did away with cable several years ago. We have an antenna in our attic that allows us to have the local channels. We have Netflix, acorn (a British channel), Disney plus (for the grands).
Have a wonderful 4th of July!

Arlene, Joe and I got rid of cable months ago and went with HULU. We LOVE it and Joe has all the sports channels he wants. We are saving about $80 a month, and still have Netflix, AcornTV, and Amazon Prime, too. Give Hulu a try. We were amazed.

We just started a 30-day free trial of Hulu and we really like it. I think we’ll keep it. Most streaming services offer at least a 7-day free trial so you can check them out.

Happy birthday to Amelia! Tell her she doesn’t even look 30. She could pass for 20-something!

Have a wonderful, relaxing Fourth. Porch sitting with a nice glass of iced tea or lemonade sounds fantastic.

Jeff and I were talking about porch sitting the other day. That was a huge part of my growing up. I have no idea how we stood the heat. There were surely more breezes back then.
We are really thinking of cutting the cord too. We have Netflix and Amazon now in addition to a basic cable. It all adds up though. Paul Allen has liked Youtube, but it is like $64 now. I think we are waiting until the fall to see how Mom does after the shingles. We may have to do things different if she doesn't bounce back such as move her here, thus we would keep cable.
Keep us posted on how you like whatever you decide.

Happy Birthday to Amelia! That was a quick delivery! Mine were all much longer...
The screwtape letters are interesting, but it does take some getting used to when you first start reading.

We got rid of cable just about a year ago. DH gets Hulu with all the news and sports channels. I get Acorn for mysteries (British, Canadian, Australia, NewZealand) and Britbox for all the old British comedies! We also get Prime and Netflix through our son.
And I have to tell you that a book that I always have on hand is C.S. Lewis’s “Mere Christianity”.

Arlene, I dropped cable in 2001 and haven't missed it except for baseball in the summer and we go to a friends house to watch the games. I have Amazon prime and my niece added us to her netflix acct. I don't find much to watch on either. Though, I am not a tv watcher so it's hard to judge by me.

I have a small porch that I love having my morning coffee on and watching the birds. I'm doing a small redo on it now.

Oh my, who was more afraid of you having the baby in the car, you or Marvin? Thank goodness you made it to the hospital in the nick of time!!

congrats on having a pilot in the family!

Arlene, if you have AT&T for your cell phone coverage, they offer AT&T NOQ (I think that's what it is called). You get a zillion channels (free HBO) for only $25 a month. We have an Apple TV device that we can stream this through. Feels like cable but without the high price! I've had Netflix in the past and wasn't a fan. I've also had HULU and liked that better. Your local PBS station probably has a service that gives you Masterpiece theater etc. Mine does and I think it is $5 a month.

I'm glad you made it to the hospital in time! That is cutting it close!

Enjoy your long weekend away!
